About the Artist

A Longlife Practice
of Seeing

Uta Peyrer-Prantl was born in 1939 in Oberpullendorf, Burgenland, Austria. She began painting in 1956 and has sustained an uninterrupted practice for nearly seven decades — one of the longest and most quietly consequential careers in Austrian post-war art.

Her work is rooted in the point: the smallest possible gesture, repeated, layered, and charged with an intensity that accumulates into something cosmic. Fields of circular forms — varying in size, density, and colour — hover in states of suspension across her canvases, inviting the eye to wander without destination.

Her formation was international from the outset. She was a founding member of the Berlin group Berlin 62, spent time in the Negev desert in Israel, in Vermont, in Japan — twice — and in New York and New Mexico. From 1978 she based her studio permanently in Pöttsching, Burgenland, where she continues to work.

Her paintings have been shown across Europe and beyond, from Galerie Ulysses in Vienna to the Czech Museum of Fine Arts in Prague, and featured in STARS — Cosmic Art from 1900 until now at the Lentos Museum in Linz. She was married to the sculptor Karl Prantl from 1957 until his death in 2010.
